Singing Nina: A Cultural Festival and Conference

A festival and conference in Germantown on May 19th (Malcolm X's birthday) as a tribute to the life and work of Ms. Nina Simone. The afternoon festival will take place at multiple sites across the neighborhood as a means to strengthen the Germantown brand.

Germantown Arts presents "Singing Nina: a cultural festival and conference." This one day festival, held at multiple locations in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, focuses on the life and music of Nina Simone.

The Schedule of Events:
-a screening of the documentary, "What Happened, Miss Simone"
-a panel discussion of Nina Simone's life and work, through a cultural and historical context
-a VIP event with a reception and live performance of Nina Simone's music with piano and voice at the Germantown Historical Society
-a cider and kombucha garden at the historic Wyck House, with a performance by DJ Rich Medina of contemporary music that has utilized Nina Simone's music via sampling
-an evening performance of "Dear Nina" by Rootstock Republic, a 7 piece string ensemble performing original arrangements of Nina Simone's music. The performance will take place at Rittenhouse Soundworks. The string section will be complimented by alumni of the Curtis Institute of music, to acknowledge Miss Simone's contribution to music and honorary degree given by Curtis.
